South Hills Flute Studio

Solo Flute Lessons

South Hills Flute Studio offers several options for method books and a wide variety of repertoire.

Beginner methods include Rubank, Eck, Flute 101 Abracadabra Flute.  We also utilize a variety of music from the start so that students can begin to play songs as quickly as possible – this not only helps the student enjoy what they are doing, but helps build dynamics, rhythm, and confidence by playing familiar tunes!  Everyone's learning path is slightly different, and your lessons will be tailored to your learning style as we build a solid practice routine that will last a lifetime.  Repertoire will be assigned based on level and using the ABRSM repertoire, and also based on the student's musical interest.  Other essentials include etudes and a variety of exercise books to improve technique.

Students may also bring in their school music and we can work through the material to help them feel more confident playing in their concert band, marching band or orchestra!  If working on school music, we will also be including methods and technique books as well as other music as time allows.

Older beginner students, previous players returning to the flute are also welcome!  We will discuss and assess where you are in your playing, your goals, and decide the best method to take.  Let's find some fun music that will challenge you to bring out your best performances in your local band, church, or just in your living room!

For the younger beginner, we also utilize the Nuvo Flute system, using either the Nuvo Toot or the JFlute, allowing students to focus on fundamentals like posture, breath support, and fingerings, as they are developing their fine motor skills.  This allows the student to grow into things like proper embouchure, and posture with a larger, longer instrument, which their arms may not reach yet.  Inquire about this today for your little one!

Recitals are held twice a year, in December and April/May at John McMillan Presbyterian Church in Bethel Park, PA.

Marching Band Prep (June-July) – Bring your marching band music and let's work through and get you up to speed before the school year starts!

Mock Auditions/Certificate Performances: Based on student interest and desire, certificates can be earned with the studio for completing each level of expertise.  We will offer a mock audition/certificate performance in front of a board of musical experts, who will rate your playing and provide helpful feedback. This is ideal for college prep for students wishing to continue their flute education a a university, but open and available to all students.  Dates and times TBA based on student readiness.

Online Lessons:  If you can't attend your lesson in person, you don't have to miss a week! We offer Zoom lessons as well!
